“I really like the camp at the Old Barracks because it allows me to go back in time, sort of, and allows me to feel like I’m back in the 1700s,” he said. “It feels pretty cool, I mean, this is a piece of history right here. I get to see the walls that were built here. I get to see what they used to do, where they used to sleep, what the conditions were.”
Devon’s appreciation for history started at a young age. He was eleven at the time we met. I could see the excitement in his eyes when he talked about the Barracks and the connection that he felt for this special place. His parents, Kim and William Lucas, supported his enthusiasm for the past and made sure that he could learn as much about history as possible. Devon went on to play music of the Revolutionary period in the Fifes and Drum Corps at the Barracks.
When I interviewed his mother for Our Vanishing Past, she said, “Devon has always had a passion for history. We were looking for a camp that would provide history, not army renditions, we really wanted a historical profile that he could experience and this is a wonderful program.”
Devon and his family came to see the documentary’s premiere at NJN’s studios in Trenton this past May. His mother and I spoke on the phone a couple times beforehand and she told me how excited they were to be attending.
Only a few months later, I had another call from Kim. At first I thought that it was a pleasant surprise, but then I could hear in her voice that something was wrong. She told me that Devon had died. He lost his life in a tragic accident. He was thirteen.
Kim said that she wanted me to know how much it meant to Devon to be part of a historical documentary. She said the whole family liked the show because it covered so many places throughout the entire state. She mentioned the joy they shared while watching the program when it first aired on television. They had celebrated with a small party for family and friends.
I told her what a positive impression Devon had made on me when I did his interview. He seemed to have a maturity beyond his years and his enthusiasm for history was inspiring. I knew immediately when I heard him speak about the Barracks that he would be in the final program. And I treasured his words about the Barrack’s being “a piece of history right here” that can be experienced firsthand.
“I wanted you to know about Devon,” Kim said. “And I want to thank NJN for letting him be a part of the documentary. It really made him happy, because he loved history so much.”
Memorial contributions can be made in Devon’s memory to the Old Barracks Fifes & Drums Corps, Old Barracks Museum, 101 Barrack Street, Trenton, NJ 08608.

We hope you are marching with others as kind & loving as you. In our hearts forever..we will miss you always. Love The Park Family
As I read this blog, I cried terribly.
One cannot imagine missing such a sweet intelligent
family member. From the moment my eyes meet, Devon’s, when he was first born, I KNEW that he was SPECIAL.
He was VERY close to my son and he ALWAYS shared with us his stories about history and his involvemnet with the OLD BARRACKS. We enjoyed learning about history, through Devon and looked forward to EVERY event he participated in. Interesting how at any age, we can learn from the younger generation and see things through their eyes differently.
I have to admit, I wish I would have attended EVERY event with him. We watched the program when it first aired and were SO proud of this little guy, and we STILL are.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEVON in HEAVEN…
our little angel who will
ALWAYS be with us and ALWAYS missed.
Aunt Kathy, Uncle Gary, & Shea feel a HUGE VOID in our lives however we are thankful to have had you in our life for a cherrished thirteen plus years.
Kim, Bill, & Ashley, all I can say is, I LOVE YOU ALL and I am also proud of the way you raised Devon to be the most intelligent special human being I’ve ever known.
He WILL be with us ALWAYS!
We’d like to thank Kim for sharing this site with us. Although it is not much of a consolation, it is heartwarming that Devon was able to live his passion for history and become part of the preservation of our past. What an appropriate tribute to Devon, today on his birthday. His memory will not only live on in our thoughts and prayers, but also through this wonderful documentary.
To The Lucas Family, We just wanted to tell you how much
we admire you all. Devon has traveled in different circles but
he lived his life to the fullest. He knew at a young age what interested him and he went forward with his education.
We are honored to have known Devon and to be apart of
his experiences watching the Vanishing Past.
Devon will always be apart of our life each and every time
we watch the video.
Today is Devon’s 14th birthday. He will always live on in hearts.
Frank, Debbie, Frankie and Nicky

I felt as if I have personally met Devon. How touching to see a child so in touch with our countries history. My thought & prayers our with all of Devon’s family and what a shining star you must be in heaven and Happy Birthday!!!!
Devon Lucas’ life touched many of us at Chesterfield Elementary School. His curiosity and love of learning was an inspiration to many.
I personally only taught Devon 6th grade social studies, but I still remember how he was fascinated by Ancient Egypt and Alexander the Great.
Devon was also in my after-school Creative Writing Club and collaborated with another student to create a beautifully written and illustrated fantasy called “The Sacred Gem of Balance,” a mini-novel about a quest to restore peace to a medieval kingdom. It is rare to find sixth grade students with such a passion for writing and commitment to complete an entire book.
Happy 14th Birthday, Devon – From Your Chesterfield Elementary Family
On this day…making the words here match the many thoughts of Devon is certainly a task. I thank God , Kim, Bill and Ashley for sharing Devon with all of us. Over the years, I remember many moments when he was both fresh face youth and wise beyond his years. I admired Devon’s rare sense of self. He possessed a kind quiet spirit.and a great gift of purpose. Recalling Devon…you can’t help but think what a remarkable young friend! Through the eyes of “Our Vanishing Past” we are fortunate to glimpse Devon’s passion. Devon devoted more than a passing interest to history….he was an active participant. He “got” life. His freckled face and warm quiet smile appears the same as always Such a gift…to have the privilege of knowing and loving Devon.
Happy Birthday Devon!!!!
Keep smiling and being the kind and thoughtful person you are. You inspire great things in people and in your absence we will all strive to be better people by the examples you set daily.
Bill, Kim and Ashley – we send our love and best wishes to all of you.
Love, Debbie, Bryan, Kelly and Holly
I only knew Devon when he came as a youngster, with his mom to visit and attend the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event in Lexington, KY. Since I did not have children of my own I was concerned about entertaining Devon and I was afraid he would be bored while I visited with his mom. Devon was one that absorbed every bit of information about his trip to KY. He had perfect manners and was a true joy to be around. He wanted to learn and was even interested in the horse show in spite of the torrential rains. I will never forget the positive impression that Devon made on Kentuckians because he wanted to learn. I hope he will inspire other students in the future.
Kim, Bill, and Ashley,
We are thinking of you and miss Devon very much. What an incredible young man who is missed so much. We love you.
Renee and Alan
Devon,
What a beautiful tribute. You are young boy with an older appreciation for history. Your enthusiasm for this era in history was evident, even to this stranger. Your smile, words and expression are endearing and, I am sure, ever present in your family’s hearts. So small in stature, so large in spirit.
Devon…Happy Birthday!
To Kim & Family….My thoughts are with you.
As I sit with tears streaming down my face, I feel guilty for crying! You see, I never met Devon Lucas, but somehow I feel incredibly connected to him and am deeply saddened by the tragic end to his life. As a mother of two young boys, I cannot imagine the pain and anguish his family is feeling – yet they remain strong and celebrate Devon’s life with the same energy with which he lived it. As a fairly new resident to Chesterfield, I was overwhelmed at the connectivity I felt to this community – one that came together to support the Lucas family and grieve the loss of what I now know to be a tremendously intelligent, kind and happy boy wise beyond his years. As I pass by that horrible site every day, I cannot help but kiss my hand, touch my heart and raise it up to the sky – knowing that he is up there watching over all who loved him – in a weird way, I know he’s even watch over me.
Happy Birthday Devon!
To Kim, Bill and Ashley — you will forever be in my thoughts and prayers. I admire you more than words can describe.
Devon,

Devon,
Happy Birthday to you! Tell me, now that you’ve met Jefferson, Adams, Washington, Franklin and the great founding fathers of our country, what are they like? I bet pretty neat. This is my favorite time in history too. I guess we have alot in common beside our birthdays being on the same day! I miss your smile and laugh whenever you would come to the barn and play with the dogs and cats.
Always in our thoughts and prayers,
Love,
Paige and Chris Schwartzman
It is lovely to see a tribute to Devon. It is obvious that he loved the history of our country. I am sure he is still watching over his family and knows that everyone loves him.
Happy Birthday Sweet Heart, you are always in our hearts and prayers. You are always with us with everything we do. You are always here with us. Always missed, never forgotten.
We love you
Cousin Jackie
Aunt Jay and
Uncle John Lini
Devon was always a good kid. I didn’t know him that well, but whenever I passed by him he smiled at me and said a polite hello. My brother and he were good friends. They wrote a book together, came to each other’s birthdays, and had a lot of fun. I remember his picture in the newspaper dressed up as a fifer. I am good friends with his sister. I remember once, the Lucas family took Ashley and I out for ice-cream after a victorious softball game. The whole family was there. I remember sitting in the back seat with him.
He always seemed full of energy and excitement.
Happy Birthday Devon.
Love David’s little sister,
Emily
I am sure that Devon is in a happy place and is watching over all of us!

Dear Bill, Kim and Ashley,
Devon,
You are not only a friend, but the little brother I never had. Devon, I miss you and the smile you always wore. You are in a better place now.
I feel like I’m long overdue to comment on this. I am sorry.
I look back at all the special times we shared, and I smile upon those, but I still well up when I think about you being gone from this world, although you will always hold a special place in my heart. I still smile when I think of you scalping for tickets at Wrigley field!
